International Workshop on Aquaculture Health 2016 Held in YSFRI

On July 28th, 2016, the International Workshop on Aquaculture Health organized by Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI) and Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) was successfully held in Qingdao. The workshop aimed at the exchange of international research progress in aquaculture diseases, and jointly promoting sound, ecological and sustainable aquaculture development. More than 80 experts, scholars and administrators from 10 countries including China, the United States, Canada, Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Vietnam attended this event. It was supported by the “948 Project” implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture - Joint Research, Prevention and Control over Mariculture Disease in Southeast Asia, and also greatly aided by the cooperation of CAFS and the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center.

     At the meeting, Professor Jin Xianshi, the director general of YSFRI, congratulated on the convening of the meeting, and introduced YSFRI in such aspects as its history, field of study, research achievements, talent cultivation, supported industry and others. He said that this workshop has built a platform for academic exchange for national experts, and hoped them to make more extensive connection, exchanges and cooperation, as well as to propel aquaculture toward sound, ecological and sustainable development. A total of 13 experts from those 10 countries, based on the issue of aquaculture disease prevention and control, presented an academic feast mixed academic exchange with collision of ideas, and showed the latest industry developments and international cutting-edge theories and methods of aquaculture disease research. Wherein, Professor Ka Yin Leung from Trinity Western University (TWU) in Canada introduced in depth the research progress on the secretion system of Edwardsiella Tarda Type III & Type VI; Professor Li Jun, from Lake Superior State University in the US, presented the progress in B lymphoid cells in fish immunological studies; Professor Mohamed Faisal at Michigan State University discussed the challenges to research and development of effective plans on fish health; Nguyen Quang Huy, the deputy director of first Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Institute in Vietnam, introduced the development and experience of aquaculture in Vietnam; Professor Huang Jie, a researcher in YSFRI, introduced China's shrimp epidemics and bio-security technology. Additionally, representatives from Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Viet Nam introduced the research status of their respective national aquatic animal diseases.

     Afterwards, Professor Liu Zhihong, the deputy Director of the Research Division in YSFRI, gave an overview of YSFRI on international cooperation and exchanges, the OIE Reference Laboratories for White Spot Disease (WSD) and Infectious Hypodermal & Hematopoietic Necrosis (IHHN), and explained the initiative on international cooperation network under construction by YSFRI concerning aquaculture health. She expected to establish cooperation among the national scientific research institutions through this network for further development of international aquaculture. Professor Mohamed Faisal extended his willingness to join in and to provide online courses and other resources for the network. After the meeting, relevant delegates visited the breeding base of Rizhao Marine and Fisheries Research Institute.

      The workshop contributed to the enhancement of international influence of YSFRI in the field of aquatic animal disease research, laying a solid foundation for future international cooperation in this field.
